A True Story - The Hugheys

The Hugheys - Niana, Rene, Nick and Kevin

Dear Janet And Dan

I am sorry about getting this letter to you so late as I am having so much fun with my son now. He has his Baseball games and his Bowling and we go camping a lot.Dad brings the metal detector. And we hang around on the beach together. Catching up on time that was lost when he was so young. But that is all in the past and it's time to move forward. And as the bible says there's nothing worse than a woman's scorned!

I still tend to look back and remember all those other lawyers who said they were willing to help and asking for money and a "retainer" and shook my hand. Then 2 months later tells me sorry I can't help you anymore. I just wish I would of met you sooner. I could of saved a lot of money, effort and time.time is what we are all after isn't it? I can remember just a couple of years ago when my wonderful wife of 12 years was working extra hours to help me pay for my child support (God Bless Her) in my sister's Jewelry Store it was getting close to X-mas and it was another year of Dire Straits, trying again how to pay the bills and still have enough to buy each other something.

Holidays were always the most depressing time of the year when it came to custody battles. But we agreed early in our marriage never to argue during the holidays no matter what! Renting a movie and ordering a pizza was always a highlight for us and popcorn and a night out to the show was still a date after all these years all we ever wanted was some kind of normalcy .

I still remember those 7 days before X-mas when my wife was wrapping a glass angel up in the jewelry store and happened to read the paper she was wrapping it up in it, and it said "parents fight for rights"! She brought the paper home to me and wrapped the angel in something else - Divine Intervention?

Possibly we called you the next day and your husband just happened to be at a convention for Parents For Children - family's having the same problems as we did. Dan got up and proceeded to tell us what direction the wind was blowing and my wife and I put our hearts and heads up high!

Just 2 days after the convention we were Picketing in Montcalm county for Parents Coalition For Parents Rights. When we arrived back home ... guess what ... we were on the news and we could not believe it! What took us 10 years, going in and out of court, and we finally got "real custody" in only 3 months!

And now my son knows what real visitation is, and that it is something real, equal time and equal parenting. All we ever asked was for the court to be fair!

To this day it still amazes me how fast you guys got it all done! Dan and Janet next time you come up north to Mackinac please stop by and say hi, because we always have a extra room for you and we will order a pizza and talk about things we have not been able to talk about in the last few years like how many more roosters my wife can buy at the second hand store and fit in her kitchen, and how many more old coins and treasures my son and I will find again this summer.

That's all we ever wanted and I never thought I was asking for that much.

My son is happy too! The stork brought a baby girl to our household so he is now a big brother!

And yes, I told my wife there really is a Santa Claus!

Thanks again for all your help - The Hugheys Kevin, Rene, Nick and Niana
